Discussion:
using Online Banking Setup

Hi GnuCash users. How popular is the Online Banking feature which
suggests that it can automatically pull data from onine banking
websites? Are any users familiar with setting it up?
The Help section is woefully unfinished
(http://www.gnucash.org/docs/v2.2/C/gnucash-help/trans-online.html)

The only other source I found is the Wiki, which is also a bit 'rough
around the edges':
Also, none of the image links are working. They appear to be sitting
here waiting for an admin to link them?

As a new user of GnuCash, I'm just curious if this is a commonly-used
feature that is reliable for most, or if it is not quite ready for
"prime-time?"

Thanks,
Mike

It does work, but it's hard to set up since banks don't generally
publish the information necessary to configure it. They have special
deals with companies like Intuit to give them the info, but products

OFX. It looks like the Europeans

the OFX and import
it. That's flaky too.
I imagine that Brad is having trouble getting his online banking set up so that he can open an account register and select Actions>Online>Get Transactions and have Gnucash (aqbanking, actually) import the transactions directly.

It's a pain, but I have it working with two financial institutions: My local bank (Fremont Bank) and USAA. It doesn't work with Capital One or with any of my brokerage accounts.

I found the instructions at http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Setting_up_OFXDirectConnect_in_GnuCash_2 very helpful in getting it working.

Martin Preuß, who writes aqbanking, has added some nice automation features to the latest version, but there's some work yet to be done on the Gnucash side to get it integrated.

Regards,
John Ralls

OFX import for a checking acct or credit card works pretty well. OFX
import for an investment account has some issues. Sometimes GC forgets
which GC account is tied to the OFX file acct & I have to enter it
again. If you have the same stock or fund in multiple account GC can't
keep it straight and will import into the wrong one. Sometimes
transactions don't get imported.

I do both, PNC bank works with the connection, but ING bank does not
(I use the import for this). I have no problem using the OFX import
though (with both).

Followed the instructions contained in the referenced wiki with no luck. I
get no response at all. The ofx.log only show the transmission from my side.
There is no response at all from the other side. It looks like it is blocked
by a firewall or something like that.

gnucash version: 2.4.5
OS: Windows vista

Any ideas?

What bank and what kind of account? If a bank has been bought out by another bank since the FID and web address were added to the wiki, those sometimes crucial items may have changed.

Every couple years I get a free copy of Quicken Basic for buying Turbo Tax. In a pinch, I use that to retrieve my data once from where-ever, and then look at the ofx.log in Quicken's help function to find out all the parameters I need to feed to aqbanking.

It's possible the bank has gone to multifactor authentication (required by US bank regulators, supposedly starting Jan 2007). I haven't seen that yet with ofx logins, but all of my checking/savings account interactions have multi-page logins. None of my credit card suppliers does. Intuit has made multifactor a royal pain by not documenting all the necessary information. So much for open standards.

Hello and thanks for the quick reply,

I am trying to setup two accounts, one to American Express and the other to
Addison Avenue Federal Credit Union and the response when the Aqbanking
Wizard -> User Configuration -> OFX -> Get Accounts button is clicked, or
rather lack of response, is the same for both: Another window will simply
flash behind the configuration window. This window will open and close in an
instant with no chance of seeing what it may be displayed on it. And the
ofx.log only show my side of the transmission.

Here is the output of ofx.log for AmEx (with user name and password xout):
